Joyce King

Joyce King, (Artistic Director/Choreographer/Teacher), is a 2017 - 2018 recipient of the CUNY Dance Initiative - Residency at Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts, Brooklyn College. Joyce’s career path has afforded a multitude of opportunities as an educator, performer and choreographer within the U.S., Vienna, Costa Rica, Belgium, France, Japan, and Armenia. She carries an artistic versatility and fervor, committed to teaching and creating works to encourage diversity in perspective and strengthening self-awareness through the vigor of contemporary dance and storytelling. She is a recipient of the BUILD grant, The Field Artist Residency, and awardee of Top Choreography - DIXON Place/ NYC10. Joyce was interviewed live on, ‘Good Morning Armenia’, worldwide televised broadcast, and ‘Yerevan Today’, speaking on her creative process and company’s mission. Joyce established JKing Dance Company,(JKDC) in Brooklyn, NY, receiving Fiscal Sponsorship with The Field in 2010. JKDC’s contemporary theatrical repertory, created solely by Artistic Director King, questions truth and the impact of personal, social, and global choices; touring nationally and internationally. JKDC’s repertory has been seen at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Ailey Citigroup Theater, HIGH FEST International Performing Arts Festival, The TANK, Brooklyn Dance Festival, DIXON Place, NYC Children’s Museum, JCE Tribute – ‘Luigi’, White Wave’s DUMBO and COOL NY, Boston Contemporary Dance Festival, Grounds for Sculpture, Your Move, Capezio Salvatore Theater, MMAC, with additional touring to Chicago, Massachusetts, Vermont and New Jersey. Her commissioned work at: Dansstage Dance Festival; Auditorio Nacional and Teatro Eugene O’Neil Theaters – Costa Rica, New England’s Bedford Dance Ensemble and Joffrey Program at Symphony Space, Merce Cunningham Theater, DNA, Florence Guild Hall. Commercially King’s work was presented at NYC Fashion week – Louis Vuitton’s ‘Life is A Journey’ and Style Pointe Fashion and Dance. Joyce has been on faculty at Steps on Broadway, Joffrey Ballet Trainee Program, Joffrey Jazz & Contemporary Summer Intensive, and guest teacher at BDC in NYC; An adjudicator for NH Youth Dance Festival, Jazz Choreography Enterprises, Inc. and continues to educate worldwide at Summer Intensives, Workshops and Master Classes: K - Broadway(Japan), Spirit Dance(Costa Rica), Paris Center(France), Belgium Dance Festival(Belgium), HIGH FEST(Yerevan, Armenia), plus many national Festivals and studios. Joyce has had the pleasure of working with and performing original works by master choreographers/directors Lynne Taylor-Corbet, Sam Kurkjian, Graciela Daniele, Adrienne Hawkins, Danny Sloan, Fred Benjamin, Richard Levi, Lynn Simonson, Miguel Lopez, Bruce Taylor and Ron Forella. Original plays directed by Doug Hall; Musicals: Cats - Theater an der Wien, A Chorus Line, Fame, and Benefits for Broadway Cares, Michael Jackson Sportswear, and Industrials. Joyce is married to Ray and the proud mom of Aidan, her 15 yr old son.
